It’ll be a while before we have new episodes of Mad Men to watch (looks like this summer). So I recommend you occupy yourself with some notable guest shots by the show’s stars. It’s a kick to see them outside the confines of the Mad Men era. I’ll start with a certain painfully handsome fellow showing his comedic side:
Jon Hamm, aka Don Draper. On the latest episode of 30 Rock, “Generalissimo,” Hamm is as funny as he is handsome, and that’s saying something. He walks into Liz Lemon’s life, and he’ll leave you saying, “I want to go to there.” He also hosted on Saturday Night Live this season (be sure to catch the Mad Men parody, featuring a number of actual cast members).
Christina Hendricks, aka Joan Holloway: Hendricks adds spice to unusual detective drama Life as the object of desire for Adam Arkin’s character (and really, all those who see her). Must-click episode: “Did You Feel That?,” in which she helps Arkin’s character cope with an unusual post-earthquake injury. And Firefly fans will tell you that she did some of her best work on that show (must-click episode: “Our Mrs. Reynolds”)
Maggie Siff, aka department store heiress Rachel Menken: Siff lets her hair down on Sons of Anarchy, which you can watch now here (, playing a doctor who returns to her hometown and finds herself wrapped up with her golden-haired ex, who just happens to be the Hamlet of biker gangs.
Rich Sommer, aka Harry Crane: Sommer pops up on
The Office (Weight Loss Parts 1 & 2) as one of Pam’s art school friends. Not as substantive as the other appearances, but still entertaining.

Big movies on your big-screen TV — without waiting for a download. Pinch me. Or better yet, get me a Roku box, ’cause that’s what it provides. I’ve yet to meet anyone who doesn’t love their Roku. (Though they tend to know the little black bit of goodness as “the Netflix box.”) The word is out, however, as of today: Soon, it will be an Amazon Video On Demand box too. Just think of it as a great way to enjoy new-release movies like Hancock or Tropic Thunder as well as more than 40,000 other movies and TV shows — no subscription required and commercial-free. (You can also access any Amazon Video On Demand stuff you already own.) I’ve been lucky enough to try out an early version of Amazon VOD on Roku, and I have that TiVo feeling — you know, the “how did I ever live without this” sensation. Can’t wait ’til you get to try it out!

What it is: The stage to film adaptation of the hugely successful
musical based on the songs of the widely popular pop group, ABBA; Mamma Mia
opens with Sophie (Amanda Seyfriend), a 20 year old bride-to-be desperately
seeking the identity of her father. After discovering her mother, Donna’s
(Meryl Streep) diary and the names of three potential fathers; she decides to
invite all three men without her mother’s knowledge and without informing the
men of her true intentions. Set on the enchanting Greek isle, Kalokairi, the
story unfolds as the three men; American businessman Sam Carmichael (Pierce
Brosnan), Swedish adventurer Bill Andersson (Stellan Skarsgard), and British
banker Harry Bright (Colin Firth) arrive for the wedding much to the surprise
and horror of Donna. As Sophie gets to know each man, hoping to discover her
father’s identity; Donna is forced to face her past and open her heart with the
help of her two best friends; fun-loving writer Rosie (Julie Walters) and rich
three-time divorcée Tanya (Christine Baranski). Meanwhile, each of the three
men discovers that Sophie could be their own flesh and blood and promise to
walk her down the aisle unbeknownst to the other! The romance and comedy
continue as one contagious song and dance number breaks out after another until
you’ll find yourself off the couch and singing along.
Why it is significant: Grossing over $569M in the box office worldwide,
Mamma Mia is the most successful Hollywood film musical of all time and
the only film of its size to release a separate sing a long version in
theaters. With musical numbers starring Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan (who
knew!), Mamma Mia’s breathtaking scenery, attractive male leads, and nonstop
fun make it a must have DVD for mothers, daughters, lovers, ABBA groupies, and
musical fans alike. As the plot thickens, passion grows, and hilarity continues
you won’t be able to contain a smile or the urge to sing along. And you won’t
want to wait to watch it again.

Cult legend Bruce Campbell's new movie — My Name is Bruce — is still in theaters, but you can bring it home on New Year's Eve, thanks to a special (and exclusive) digital screening that he has set up via Amazon Video On Demand. The movie's about a B-movie star named Bruce Campbell (how meta!) who thinks he's doing a silly gig for publicity, but finds himself battling real monsters in a small Oregon town. You know, it's a documentary. OK, not really. Click here to sign up for the digital screening, and to see Bruce's special introduction. (You can also get it on DVD or Blu-ray in February. And check my Q&A with the Army of Darkness and Evil Dead star, who's just as charming and funny as you'd expect. – Stephanie Reid-Simons, Amazon Video On Demand
