Cows that are given names produce more milk than those that are not, says a new study out of England.

The study, conducted by Catherine Douglas and Peter Rowlinson at Newcastle University in Newcastle upon Tyne, discovered that more affectionate treatment of cattle — including giving cows names — can increase milk production by more than 68 gallons annually. An average cow produces about 2,000 gallons of milk a year.

A speeding bullet — nickel-colored and hairy — slammed into me while I was showering the other day.

My new cat, it turns out, loves water. She’ll seek it out any time, any place.

It was more than just a little startling the first time she swan-dived into standing water, dashed under the shower for a moment, and then departed in a soaking streak. That’s her daily practice now — joining me for a quick drenching. She doesn’t seem to have any interest in swimming. A quick in-and-out thing is her preference.

A few weeks ago I was at the Burbank airport. The gift store carried Mexican jumping beans. I bought a couple of boxes for my kids.

I was as delighted with the jittery beans as my daughters were, but I was even more charmed by the informational card that came with the beans. The irresistible, off-kilter writing style of the card’s author reminds of Dr. Bronner’s, with the added bonus of making sense.
